PollinatorLIVE: A Distance Learning Adventure

While pollinators may come in small sizes, they play a large and often
undervalued role in the production of the food we eat, the health of
flowering plants, and the future of wildlife. A decline in the numbers and
health of pollinators over the last several years poses a significant threat
to biodiversity, global food webs, and human health, according to
scientists.

PollinatorLIVE is continuing last year's distance learning adventure that
focused on monarch butterflies. This year's FREE distance learning
adventure will feature pollinators, citizen science projects, and gardening.
In addition, PollinatorLIVE will keep you up-to-date with the latest about
monarch butterflies. For more information and to register, go to
http://pollinatorlive.pwnet.org <http://pollinatorlive.pwnet.org/> .

Join us for a series of live interactive web casts, web seminars, and
satellite field trips about
pollinators, gardening, and conservation. The web site features resources
that meet National Science Education Standards for the classroom.
PollinatorLIVE is geared toward students in grades 4 - 8, but there are
lesson plans and activities of interest to teachers and students in earlier
and later grade levels.

Register for PollinatorLIVE and participate in the following web casts for
your classrooms:

*	On May 12, 2010, join us at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET for PollinatorLIVE:
<http://pollinatorlive2.pwnet.org/teacher/webcasts.php> The Insect Zoo in
Your Schoolyard. Drop in at any time during this full day of web casts to
learn about pollination, pollinators, participatory science projects, the
latest about monarch butterflies, and how to attract pollinators to your
schoolyard. Experts will answer your students' questions.
*	In September 2010 (date TBA), join us for PollinatorLIVE:
<http://pollinatorlive2.pwnet.org/teacher/webcasts.php> Honey Bees, Native
Bees, and More. Bees are the champion pollinators and need pollen and
nectar from a variety of sources. That's a good thing for people since one
out of three bites of food is the result of pollinators.
*	On April 13, 2011, join us at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower
Center in Texas for Nature's Partners: Pollinators, Plants, and People.
Meet the pollinators and their plants and learn how people benefit.

PollinatorLIVE is also offering web seminars for teachers and administrators
through the National Science Teachers Association.

*	On March 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. ET, learn how to fund, plan, design,
maintain, and use a schoolyard garden during a web seminar. Eliza Russell
with the National Wildlife Federation's schoolyard habitat program will
explain the "how-tos," while Cindy Wrenn, a principal in Prince William
County, Virginia, will talk about how the garden at her school is used as an
outdoor classroom and science lab.
*	On April 13 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. ET, learn about the Nature's
Partners inquiry-based curriculum developed by the North American Pollinator
Protection Campaign and how to contribute to real science projects,
including Bee Hunt, Goldenrod Challenge, and the Lost Ladybug project.

Additional web seminars are planned for October 2011 to learn about the
benefits of outdoor education and for February 2011 to learn about
schoolyard gardens and good nutrition.

Stay tuned for more details. Questions? Contact Kristy Liercke at
lierckkx at pwcs.edu or by calling (800) 609-2680. PollinatorLIVE is brought
to you by the USDA Forest Service - Conservation Education and many other
sponsors and partners.
