Ruth rroperti at zoominternet.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Lucas Johnson To: Lucas Johnson ; Abby Ybarra Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2009 7:24 PM Subject: National Day of Service & Tell Obama about NCLI NEWS FROM THE NCLI COALITION We have news on two fronts: 1. National Day of Service Events are happening nationally and in Washington, D.C. 2. Now is the chance to tell President-Elect Obama about NCLI. NCLI Takes Lead in Service Events The NCLI Coalition is excited to be an active participant in President-elect Barack Obama's national day of service next Monday, January, 19th, coinciding with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and a day before the presidential inauguration. To date, members of the Coalition are planning events in nine states; many thanks for making those happen! It's not too late to plan an event. Please visit our website to take advantage of tools we have prepared to help you make a service event a success. This day of service presents a great opportunity for the No Child Left Inside Coalition to highlight the work our members do to educate people about the environment and our commitment to solving environmental challenges. Please contact us with questions or if you need other resources. Help us make the national service day a great success! In the Washington, D.C. area, we are thrilled to be a co-host of a major service event to take place on Monday. All members of the NCLI Coalition are invited to attend. (Please see the bottom of this email for the invitation.) The event is being hosted by the House Majority Leader, Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland, and a supporter of the NCLI Act. Co-sponsors include our lead Congressional sponsors, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island and Rep. John P. Sarbanes of Maryland, as well as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The event will feature participation by community groups in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington and school groups from the region who will take part in environmental education activities. The day will be highlighted by the planting of a new grove of trees to commemorate the day - and help clean up the Anacostia watershed. Please join us if you can! Spread the Word about NCLI - to President-elect Obama We have an immediate opportunity to let the incoming Obama administration know about the importance of the No Child Left Inside Act. The president-elect's transition team has launched a discussion of environmental issues on the official transition website. Let's make sure the administration knows that there are millions of people who believe environmental education should receive more support. We can do that by posting comments and voting on the importance of our issue on the change.gov site. Here's how to do it: 1. Go to the Obama transition team website devoted to a public discussion of issues. 2. Create a change.gov sign-in, which only takes a moment. 3. Click on the Energy and Environment tab on the left side of the page. 4. Post a comment about the importance of environmental education and the No Child Left Inside Act. (See suggested talking points below.) 5. Or, vote in support of a previous post on NCLI by clicking on the button next to the post. The more votes the idea gets, the more prominence it receives on the page. You can also post comments about a previous post on NCLI. 6. Spread the word to your organization's members. We are told that the president-elect will indeed receive a summary of the issues advanced by the public on this website, so get busy! Talking Points for posting on change.gov a.. Environmental education helps kids engage with nature, gets them out of the house and the classroom and fosters lifelong interest in the environment. b.. Outdoor learning activities will help kids become more physically active. c.. The federal government woefully under-funds environmental education. d.. The environment faces enormous challenges; we have to equip young people with the knowledge to understand and overcome them. e.. Young people need a strong grasp of the environment to move into 21st Century jobs, particularly the millions of green jobs that the economy is expected to create. f.. The NCLI movement is backed by more than 1000 member organizations, including many businesses. Tens of millions of Americans are concerned that kids are losing touch with nature. g.. The NCLI Act is an affordable measure that will provide much-needed funds to train teachers, build high-quality environmental learning programs, and help states strengthen their environmental education programs. Please forward this email to members of your organization. As always, many thanks! I just emailed someone concerning Project INSTAR which is a week-long workshop for teachers in which you can choose several topics to study. This workshop takes place in Miami or South Carolina. I would really like to be able to go underwater in some type of submarine. Since science is your area of expertise, I thought you might know of something. I don't need to take it for credit, but I thought there would have to be something out there for teachers during the summer. One activity I would love to do is hatch a shark!! NWF has a program called Green Hour. the following is a quote from their website regarding this program. "Most importantly, by giving our children a "Green Hour" a day -- a bit of time for unstructured play and interaction with the natural world -- we can set them on the path toward physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
