Hey all,
Along the lines of Jamie Reeger, Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, has a MS program in Environmental Education. It is a 2 year program (6 science courses and 6 education courses) that can be completed full-time graduate students or by working professionals. In fact, many formal-teachers (elementary and secondary) and non-formal educators are in the program. If anyone is interested, please contact me or surf the SVC webpage at http://www.stvincent.edu/graduate_programs6

Stephanie and anyone else who might be interested in Graduate School,

The Audubon Expedition Institute at Lesley University has an outstanding program. It is a MS in Ecological Teaching and Learning. It is a full time graduate program that incorporates your job along with school. It is an 18 month program. I am finishing it up now and can't speak highly enough about it. I have been an informal educator with a teaching degree for the past 15 years and this program has increased my understanding of the environment and made me a better teacher as well.
Check out their web site at
http://www.lesley.edu/gsass/audubon/etl_program.html
Good luck and let me know if you have further questions about the program.

Hi Stephanie, Welcome to the listserve! You have a good idea to think this all through and seek all the advise and information you can. I also agree having more options is wise, although teaching jobs in western PA are still scarce. Now that our students are being taught the enviornment and ecology standards, the demand should increas. I am not sure what all possibilities would be available in ecopsychology, but we have a live-in school near me where troubled students use environmental activities to work thru their emotional problems. That might be a good combination for someone with your interests.

Check our website, www.paee.net. to find contact information on your Regioanl Director. Tim Hart is in the NW, went to Slippery Rock, and is a teacher. He may have some thoughts for you. Consider attending our March conference for networking. Good luck. Ruth

  Subject: [PAEE] Education advice?

  Hi everyone,

I joined the list to see what I could learn although I am not yet in this field. I would love to make a career change to environmental education, though, and wondered if anyone could give me some advice.

I was looking at going for a Masters in biology (going for a second Bachelor's would actually cost me more as it would have to come entirely out of my own pocket). I am considering getting certified as a secondary teacher at the same time, which would add about a year to the program.

My eventual goal would be to work at an environmental center rather than in a secondary school (although I'm also considering research). I feel like the options in my area may be limited and I need to keep them open, which is part of the reason for teacher certification. (I am also interested in ecopsychology, but I don't see that as something that could be a full-time career, rather more of a subset of a psychology
practice.)

So, my first question is, can anyone make sense out of my confusion and give me advice on my possible education choices?

My second question is, I live in northwest PA, and it seems a little quieter up here compared to others regions in the state. (I would like to stay up here if possible after graduating.) Anyone from the area?

Thanks so much, and sorry to make this such a long first post!

  Stephanie
