THE ACADEMY OF NATURAL SCIENCES JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Safari Overnight/Scout Badges Coordinator 
Group:  Public Programs Department: Education
Reports To: Elementary Science Education Manager  
Status: Full time Salary Range: $0-$25,000 Commensurate on experience
Deadline: September 1, 2006

Summary:
The Safari Overnight/Scout Badges coordinator is responsible for managing all aspects of the Academy's highly successful overnight program which runs from January through May on Friday or Saturday nights. This person is also responsible for managing all aspects of the Scout badge program which runs through most of the year. The Coordinator is also considered a teacher/naturalist, responsible for teaching science-based, live animal, interactive classes and programs to a variety of school and public audiences.  

Duties:
1. Oversee all aspects of planning, coordinating, and evaluating programs
2. Recruiting, hiring, training and supervising part-time staff and volunteers teaching the programs
3. Work closely with the visitor services department to ensure successful advertising and scheduling of programs
4. Work closely with building operations staff to ensure safe and efficient implementation of programs
5. Develop and manage program budgets
6. Spend certain evenings at the Academy during overnights as manager of program
7. Develop lessons plans and themes for overnights. Develop new scout badge lessons. 
8. Teach natural history lessons at the Academy for visiting groups (PreK-12) 
9. Additional duties and responsibilities as specified by the Elementary Science Education Manager

Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree required in science or education (ecology, biology, environmental education, or related field preferred). Strong background in natural science a plus
2. Minimum two years teaching in an informal setting, or equivalent experience.
3. Experience coordinating and managing staff
4. A team-oriented approach and versatile, self-motivated personality
5. Experience developing programs, and knowledge of inquiry-based education.
6. Excellent managerial skills, including supervisory, budgetary, and general administrative
7. Flexibility and the ability to work well with others
8. Must be flexible to work weekends and evenings
9. Excellent computer skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills 
10. Valid Driver's license 
11. Ability and willingness to work with Academy's entire live animal collection
