[dvs] Votes Imminent on Vital Energy Conservation Bills

Pennsylvania's state representatives can insure major, new electricity conservation programs are created for all customers in all parts of Pennsylvania. And our state can become a national leader on energy conservation in the process.
But to do that, we need yes votes on HB 2200 and HB 2201 from our state representatives.
A vote on HB 2200, the bill creating major energy conservation programs - reducing the need for new power plants, with more distribution towers and wires, more air pollution, and more global warming pollution - is set for the House Consumer Affairs Committee on Tuesday (February 5, 2008) and for the floor of the house the following week. A vote is also set on the same schedule for HB 2201, which would give all consumers the tools they need to use energy smarter, especially smart meters. (For more information on these bills, visit our podcast site, www.pennfuturepodcast.org and click on the top two podcasts.)
Conserving energy is vital to Pennsylvania's environment and economy, but there is significant pressure to weaken these bills that would make energy conservation possible.
TAKE ACTION: Please contact your state representative today to urge her/him to vote for both HB2200 and HB 2201.

I will make the pledge. Since I've moved to Northern Liberties, I only drive 2-3 days per week. The subway is a wonderful thing!

Three more since last week. That makes 25. Half-way to the goal of 50. You give to NPR? This is at least as important. There are hundreds of you out there! Take the pledge!
Judy? Sherry? Jerry? Kevin? Jaclyn?
You know, of course, the one day you leave your car sitting does not have to be the same day every week, right? Any one in every seven.

Hi,
Those who know me will not be surprised to know I spend rather less time than many good folks here focusing on policy change and rather more on personal behavior change.
I want to re-state/revive the DVS Less Driving Pledge (capitalized, sure, but having no official standing). It is...
Leave your car sitting (and do not drive any other car) one day in every seven. Since one-seventh of all oil production in the world supports cars on American roads, we're doing a little numerological sleight of mind, and making the pledge one day out of every seven: no driving of any kind. Couple of years ago, about 22 people here took this pledge. Most are city dwellers and don't use a car much, but they signed on anyway. (Several said make the pledge tougher. I agree in principle: don't drive at all if this is possible for you.)
Today, this list is MUCH bigger than when I first floated the pledge. If you have become part of this list since 2005, take the pledge. If you actually reduce driving by c. 1/7, you'll save a heap of CO2. Tons. Literally. And combined, our number will be gigantic. You'll save about $3 out of every $21. That's good, too.
I know, I know: the numbers are a bit slippery. But you get the idea. Cut back on your driving. Take the pledge. How? Send a note back to the listserve saying: "I am taking the pledge. I will not drive my car or anyone else's one day out of every seven."
We're 22 pledg-ees today. Can we be 50?
Ralph
