[dvs] Where our food comes from

If you, like me, are concerned about where your food comes from, the
purity of it, and are interested in supporting local economies rather
than corporate empires, the following link might be useful.
Hain Celestial owns many of the most well recognized brand names in the
organic food business, and indeed the only source for organic flours and
oils (other than olive) at many health food stores. Hain, as the link to
its board of directors below shows, has close links to many folks we
would not trust to handle our food. Over the years Hain has pursued an
effective business strategy, from their point of view, but one which
leaves the consumer essentially helpless. Arrowhead Mills, Celestial
Seasonings and others of their brands were privately owned companies
that were committed to organic food, but were confronted with offers
which their either didn't understand, or couldn't refuse -- assuming
they were still committed at the times of the deals.

To me this only emphasizes the importance of developing a comprehensive
local sustainable food economy in our region, and encouraging such
development in others as part of our response to global burning and peak
resources. I am particularly interested, as a consumer of wheat and
other bread grains, more so than rice, in the reestablishment of these
crops in Pennsylvania on a commercial scale.
