Water systems listed in red font are fluoridated, either directly or through purchasing from another water system (see "seller" columns on right) which is fluoridated.
In 2000, proponents of fluoridation targeted Erie City, the state's 3rd largest non-fluoridated water system, bringing the percentage of Erie County residents being served with fluoridated water from 6% to 87%. Despite opposition from City Council, proponents did an end-run around democratic decision-making which is their typical way of operating-and got the unelected water authority to start water fluoridation in December 2002.
